Trading in your iMac 24 M4 can be a smooth process if you ensure that all your personal data is securely erased. Properly wiping your device protects your privacy and prepares it for the next user. Follow these steps to wipe your iMac thoroughly before trade-in.
Preparation Before Wiping
Before starting the wiping process, back up any important files or data you want to keep. Use Time Machine or another backup method to save your documents, photos, and settings. Once backed up, sign out of all services to prevent issues for the next user.
Sign Out of Apple Services
To ensure your Apple ID is disconnected from the device, sign out of iCloud, iTunes, and App Store.
Sign Out of iCloud
Go to System Preferences, click on Apple ID, then select Overview and click Sign Out. Follow the prompts to complete signing out.
Sign Out of iTunes & App Store
Open the Music app, go to Account > Sign Out.
Erase Your iMac
Once all data is backed up and accounts are signed out, you can erase your iMac using macOS Recovery Mode.
Enter macOS Recovery Mode
Restart your iMac and immediately press and hold Command (⌘) + R until the Apple logo or spinning globe appears. Release the keys to enter Recovery Mode.
Erase the Disk
In macOS Utilities, select Disk Utility and click Continue. Choose your startup disk (usually named “Macintosh HD”) and click Erase. Confirm the format as APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click Erase again.
Reinstall macOS
After erasing, return to the macOS Utilities window and select Reinstall macOS. Follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall the operating system. This process ensures the device is clean and ready for the next owner.
Final Steps
Once reinstallation is complete, the iMac will restart to the setup screen. To leave it in a factory-default state, press Command + Q to shut down. The device is now ready for trade-in, free of your personal data.
