If you are planning to sell your Mac Studio M1 Max, formatting it properly is essential to protect your personal data and ensure the new owner starts fresh. This guide will walk you through the steps to securely erase your device and prepare it for sale.
Backup Your Data
Before erasing your Mac, make sure to back up any important files. Use Time Machine or other backup methods to save your documents, photos, and settings.
Sign Out of iCloud and Other Services
To prevent issues for the new owner, sign out of iCloud, iMessage, and FaceTime. Go to System Preferences > Apple ID, then click Overview and choose Sign Out.
Erase Your Mac Studio M1 Max
Follow these steps to erase your Mac:
- Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner and select Restart.
- Immediately press and hold Command (⌘) + R until the Apple logo appears. This will boot into macOS Recovery.
- In the macOS Utilities window, select Disk Utility and click Continue.
- Select your startup disk (usually named “Macintosh HD”) from the sidebar.
- Click the Erase button, choose APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format, then confirm.
- Once erased, close Disk Utility to return to the macOS Utilities window.
Reinstall macOS
After erasing the disk, reinstall macOS to give the new owner a clean system:
- In the macOS Utilities window, select Reinstall macOS.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the latest compatible version of macOS.
- This process may take some time, depending on your internet connection.
Finish and Prepare for Sale
Once the installation is complete, the Mac will restart to the setup screen. To leave it ready for the new owner, press Command + Q to shut down the device instead of completing the setup process.
Your Mac Studio M1 Max is now formatted and ready for a new owner. Remember to remove any accessories, boxes, or receipts to make the sale process smoother.
